ABOUT
Our Room
The idea for this came from a serendipitous conversation between three of us - Jan, Polly and Mitch. As queer women, we realised we were still looking for spaces where we could “find our people.” Spaces designed by us - queer women and non-binary people - for us.
Our lives are already full - work, friends, family, interests and hobbies.
But it felt like something was missing.
Something that seemed surprisingly hard to find: the joy of entering a room and enjoying the company of interesting people with whom we share a queer outlook on life. A place to engage in lively, fun, thoughtful and authentic conversations with other queer women and non-binary people. People who are curious about the world and each other. People who also enjoy good food and want the time to linger and really get to know each other.
A room where you can simply be yourself.
And so, because we couldn’t find it, we decided to create something and, inspired by the words of Virginia Woolf, “A Room of Our Own” was born.
Is this event for me?
You might enjoy this evening if you are looking for:
Meaningful, lively conversation rather than networking
A welcoming inclusive space for queer women and non-binary people
The chance to meet interesting, thoughtful people outside your usual circles
An evening that feels warm, fun, relaxed and intentional
Good food shared around a table
THE EVENING
What to expect from our evenings
The evening includes
A shared dinner in a welcoming setting
A short reading from the work of a queer woman
A conversation with a queer guest speaker
An unhurried space for talking, listening and laughing
Since we first had this idea, we’ve heard the same thing again and again: queer women and non-binary people are looking for spaces to connect more deeply, laugh more loudly and leave feeling part of a community.
A Room of Our Own is designed to offer exactly that.
A gathering for queer women and non-binary people who value authentic conversation, good food, and new connections.
Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s idea that women need rooms of their own, these evenings create a space where we can come together without performance or expectation. No networking. No panels. Just us.
Each dinner aims to bring together people from different backgrounds, generations, professions, interests - all united by curiosity and openness - and, of course, queerness!
FINDING EACH OTHER
Who is coming to this event?
Places are limited to between 20-30 guests, depending on location
To help us manage each dinner we ask people to register their interest in attending. Places will then be confirmed once we have an idea of interest level.
You can come on your own or with a friend that you think would also enjoy the experience. We anticipate most people will come on their own and the space is designed to build connections.
We want to encourage the rich diversity of backgrounds and life experiences that we know queer women and non-binary people embrace.
We hope our guests will help us to include people of all ages and stages of life, professional and creative interests and identities within the queer women and non-binary community.
Should we find we are oversubscribed and cannot accommodate everyone, we will make every effort to include people who were disappointed at future dinners.
It is our expectation that we will always respect each other’s points of view and leave the room as friends.
